County Tax Increases PDF Print E-mail

New Local Option Income Tax Starts Monday October 1st

Jasper County Local Tax is now 3.05%

Total Local County IncomeTax + Indiana State Income Tax = 6.45%

Go to the tab Taxes go up by 1.55% to see an explanation of the taxes and what they will be used for.

Indiana Dept. Of Revenue has sent notices to employers to change the local county tax.  You can expect to see changes in your pay checks by the end of october.  Watch this web site for information as to how much of a credit you will get toward your property taxes vs. how much you will be paying in county tax.  You can be the judge if this tax will help you or hurt you.  The tax is able to be changed once a year by the county council, so let your voice be heard.

I am much more in favor of "usage" taxes based on choices in our lifestyles. Most people don't "choose" to have either high or low income for which they can be penalized more so by this new income tax if their income is higher.
On the otherhand, one can "choose" to live in a more expansive and valued home and therefore, then, be taxed more on this home compared to choosing a less valued home. If disgusted by high taxes on a high valued home, a homeowner can sell that home and get a less valued and taxed home.
There is much more potential for abuse by government when given "carte blanche" with higher "guaranteed" income taxes which can be collected as is the case with Jasper County's new tax (what is the likelihood of this actually lowering in the future?). Given income or tax base.... government usually will spend more.

What is this vast increase being used for by the county? Are there budgets really in that much need? They don't provide much in the way of services, I have been on a waiting list to get a county owned ditch that adversely affects drainage on my property cleaned out for over a year. I don't feel the increase is justified, it's outright confiscation. I work in IL, if the taxes get much higher here I may as well move to Chicago and save myself the 2 hour commute. It used to be the selling point of IN was low cost of living. They are very close to unbalancing that equation.

well i have expressed very much the dissatiafaction i have with the councilmen that voted for this outragous tax increase. Now jasper county is one of the highest income tax in the state, they can say that property taxes will decrease but that wil be the first to go back up also. I did some research and most of our council men are farmers so to who ever reads this do to farm subsidies website to see what they have gotten in free money the past ten years.

We recently moved here from Lake County to get away from high taxes. I'm so confused! No realtor explained the taxes aren't what they seem here. All we saw were the low property taxes! I'm beginning to think that we made a HUGE mistake by moving here!

When all the people that live here and work in Illinois move back to Illinois because they can not afford this increase, you will not have to worry about increasing a tax rate. there will be no tax payers left.

I would like to know where I can get an itemized break down of every penny of tax money spent by the county. It would be even more convenient if an itemized list was sent to every household at least once a year. It would also be beneficial, if the county made an effort to let us know exactly what is happening in our county. A mailing with all the details listed would give us a heads up on programs that they are brainstorming and a list of dates for voting would make getting involved more opportune.

Individuals are elected to take the burden of the process of organization off of the backs of its residents. It is a job that they have chosen to do, therefore they should do their jobs and be held to the standards, as well as be held accountable like every other working individual. If they cannot do the job then they need to be replaced by someone who can; plain and simple.

this county has been a bunch of crooks for a long time. the only farmers that they are worried about is the dairy farmers.
i moved from this county 16 years ago to cass county and their tax is only 1.5% and they have newly paved roads, plowed roads, new hospital, new jail and all kinds of things done to logansport.
should've stayed there and doing my best to move back and stay away from this crooked county. Jasper & Pulaski are the two highest in the state, they always been monkey see monkey do.
